BACKGROUND OF THE YORKSHIRE TERRIER
The Yorkshire Terrier was created around the middle of the 19th Century by crossing a number of Terrier varieties that existed at that time. This was done around the middle to north of England, especially in the County of Yorkshire, hence the name Yorkshire Terrier.
The "early" Yorkshire Terriers could be as large as 6 kg (14 lbs.) and were used, like other Terrier breeds, to kill rats. Over the time breeders produced a smaller, more beautiful dog that was a household pet and show dog, rather than a rat killer. To day, see Yorkshire Terrier Standard.
TAKE NOTE:
The Yorkshire Terrier is not suited as an outdoor dog. Ideal owner/s are those who require a family companion and are prepared to have the dog living indoors or sometimes during the day in an enclosed backyard.
Yorkshire Terriers are generally robust little - dogs, they will happily go for a walk with their owners. But if the backyard is of sufficient size, then adequate exercise can be gained by running round in the backyard without the necessity of being taken for a walk in the street.
IDEAL OWNER'S
The Yorkshire Terrier is suitable for people of all ages. It is a good little family dog but needs supervision around young children. The Yorkshire Terrier has very fine hair. It is similar to human hair and does not shed like most other breeds. If you need more information about Yorkshire Terriers go to General information, about the breed.
See the Index.
